Additional information as of March 15, 1992.
Please Note: If you don't understand what I'm talking about in
this file, read FONTINFO first and *then* this one and it will
make more sense.
- Adobe's Install program works best when the font files have
underscores in them. If you get a directory of any Adobe font
disk, you'll see that every font is broken down into no more than
four letters and four spaces.
For example, Tekton becomes:
TK______.*
and Tekton Bold becomes:
TKB_____.*
and Tekton Bold Oblique becomes:
TKBO____.*
If the font you want to install has no underscores, it would be
in your best interest to rename them and make the appropriate
changes in the .INF file and INSTALL.CFG file.
- Remove all comment lines in the .AFM file. Some people try to
include characters like the copyright symbol in the comment line
and it translates as a right angle of sorts, and Install hates
it. I'm not kidding you, one non-letter or number in the .AFM
file and it really freaks out by giving you the cryptic ERROR
PARSING FONT_________________.AFM.
- If you get the error:
More Metrics thab StartCharMetrics
It means that there are more lines of code in the .AFM file than
the .AFM file has recorded. Go to the line that has:
StartCharMetrics SomeNumberThatIsObviouslyWrong
And below it is a list of lines that begins with the letter "C"
and then a number, and then some information. DO NOT rely on that
number to give you an accurate count of how many metrics there
are because they refer only to the ASCII character number
represented. You're gonna have to count 'em out. (which unless
you have a shortcut can be a real drag)
Fonts generated by Fontographer on the Macintosh seem to have a
tendency (although not all the time) to miscount by one. (and one
is usually how much it is off by). If you have pages and pages of
numbers and don't want to count them all out, try just increasing
the figure in StartCharMetrics by one and re-running Install.
Usually that does it.
- .AFM files that for some reason come double spaced do not seem
to have any problem installing. You may have problems with some
other part of it, but the fact that it is double spaced does not
seem to cause any undue hardships.
- Install really *hates* fonts that do not come with .AFM files.
If you're trying to install your fonts into ATM, don't bother
with any of this, just let ATM do all the work for you.
- The line that says EncodingScheme is either AppleStandard or
AdobeStandardEncoding. In what I think is an awfully funny
statement on Adobe's Install program, Install doesn't like fonts
that have "AdobeStandardEncoding" as its EncodingScheme. Play it
safe and go with AppleStandard. This trick has made fonts work
when before I got the "Error Parsing WhateverFont." message. Go
figure.
- Do not skimp on AppleFondID. I know its a stupid four digit
number that doesn't seem to have anything to do with anything,
but if there are two fonts on the same disk that have the same
AppleFondID, it'll return an error. No joke.
- Some fonts simply will not, for no particular reason, install,
proving once in for all that computers are not an exact science.
I still get that rotten "Error Parsing
WhateverFont___________.AFM" and I can't figure out why. Maybe
it's me. Some font seem to only install on alternate Tuesdays
only when the moon is waxing....
Disclaimer: I didn't do it, I swear! I wasn't even there! I don't
even own a Tiffany Lamp! The check's in the mail!
I suppose this is copyright somebody but I can't tell for the
life of me who. So let's say Copyright (C) 1992 Adobe Systems
Inc. so I don't run the risk of an infringement suit. Anything
else that belongs to anybody is Copyright (C) 1992 them too.
